There really is a difference between double beds and king size beds. Firstly, king size beds are 10 – 15 cm wider than double beds. King size beds are also 10cm longer than double beds. It may not seem like a big difference, but anyone who has ever shared a bed with someone knows what a difference a few square centimeters of space can make.
What is a double bed?

A double bed can have different widths and lengths. It depends on the country of manufacture. Thus, in English-speaking countries the English measurement system is used in feet and inches, and in European countries it is metric. Therefore, the standard sizes of beds from manufacturers in these countries are slightly different.

A double room, by American standards, measures 130 × 200 cm; in continental Europe - 140x200 cm; in Scandinavia (for example, in IKEA) - 180 × 200 cm. In Asia, a double bed will measure 152 × 188 cm.
What is a king size bed?

King size beds may not seem much larger than double beds. But when it comes to sleeping, a little extra space can go a long way. If you share a king-size bed with a partner, you each get extra privacy.

A king size bed has a length of 200 cm and a width of 190-200 cm. Therefore, king size beds are larger due to not only the width, but also the length. The extra length can make a big difference, especially if one of you is tall.
How to find out the minimum comfortable bed size?

To understand your minimum comfortable bed size, just lie on your back and place your fingers on your stomach and place your elbows to the sides. The distance from the elbows to the edges of the bed should be at least 10 cm. And with your knees bent and lying on your side, your knees should not hang over the bed, and at least 15 cm should remain behind your back.
Double bed or king size bed?

Double beds can be great if you plan to sleep alone. They give you plenty of room to move around without taking up too much space in your bedroom. Plus, since smaller sheets tend to be less expensive than larger sheets, you'll save some money on your bedding.

But if you plan to sleep with a partner (or if you're tall) you might be better off with a king size bed. The extra width will give you and your partner more room to get comfortable, and the extra length will prevent your legs from dangling over the edge of the bed. Of course, you'll have to sacrifice some space in your bedroom, and you'll likely end up spending more on bedding. But a good night's sleep is something you can't skimp on.
A quick overview of bed sizes

Of course, double and king size beds aren't the only options on offer. To help you understand the differences between all the beds out there, we've put together a quick guide to bed sizes that you can refer to any time you need a refresher.

     single beds - width from 70 to 120 cm, length from 190 to 210 cm;
     one-and-a-half - width from 120 to 160 cm, length from 190 to 210 cm;
     double - width from 140 to 200 cm, length from 190 to 210 cm;
     “king size” - width from 180 cm, length from 200 cm.

When arranging a bedroom, it is also important not to forget about the ergonomics of the space. Even when choosing the smallest bed model, pay attention to the distance from the door to the bed and from the bed to the window. You should be able to approach the sleeping area comfortably.
